42 Days Across the Labrador Wilderness

Kevin Wild just dropped an 8-hour film documenting his 42-day, 650km solo canoe expedition across the Labrador wilderness. 8 hours. It earns every minute.

The journey takes him from the northern boreal forest, through the taiga and tundra of the Labrador plateau, and down the Kogaluk River to the Labrador Sea. Polar bear territory. He set off carrying 267lbs of gear, including 82lbs of food and his canoe.

There are so many moments in this one. Bears. Moose. A lightning storm. Scaling down what is basically a cliff with a canoe strapped to his back. And then whales. He paddles alongside whales. The drone footage throughout is great, but those whale sequences are something else.

The thing that keeps getting me is the effort it must have taken to film all of this while also, you know, surviving a 42-day solo expedition in the wilderness. This isn't just someone pointing a GoPro at themselves. It's properly shot. Drone work at key moments to set the scene, unique angles that put you right there. The result feels less like a YouTube video and more like a full-length documentary.

I first heard about this trip through LostLakes and had been looking forward to it. I was not prepared.
